5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner

Dayton air conditioner

Summer can be hot and having reliable air conditioning makes you feel a lot better when it’s hot and humid. If your system isn’t capable of keeping your home cool then it may be time to consider upgrading your cooling system. Look for these tell-tale signs that your air conditioner needs replaced rather than repaired.

1. Higher Energy Bill

Have you kept your air conditioner on at a constant temperature all summer, but notice that your energy bill has increased a lot over the past few months? If this is happening, you probably have a less than efficient unit. On average, air conditioning should represent 60-65% of your energy bill. Compare your bills over the past few months to determine the efficiency of your unit.

2. Improperly Sized Unit

Have you noticed on the hottest days that your system doesn’t maintain your desired temperature? Then your system may be too small for your home. Have you noticed a wide swing in temperatures inside your home? Then your current system may be too large. Having a properly sized system is key to maintaining temperatures and providing optimal energy efficiency.

3. Age of System

The older the system the lower the efficiency. Even a well maintained system will lose efficiency over time. An outdated system will ultimately cost more money to maintain than a newer, high efficiency system. If your unit is more than 10 years old, consider replacement.

4. Air Quality

Air quality is always important, especially for those with allergies and asthma. If your system lacks in efficiency, it will also lack in air quality. Upgrading to a high efficiency system will help remove dust and allergens from the home, and will improve air quality.

5. Frequent Repairs

Are you having to repair your air conditioner again? Then it may be time for replacement. Mechanical equipment eventually begins to fail. If your air conditioner is costing you more and more money to keep it running then it may save you more to replace it rather than repair it.
